Procedure for complaints against Queensland registered veterinary surgeons alleging negligent or incompetent practice
AVA code of professional conduct
The offence provisions of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1936 (www.legislation.qld.gov.au) are listed in part 4B of the Act. The meaning of the term professional misconduct is not limited in the Act but Section 22F provides a list of examples.
Incidents of non-veterinarians claiming to be veterinarians or performing acts of veterinary science should be reported to the Veterinary Surgeons Board. An investigation will proceed if there is evidence that the person may be acting illegally.
Complaints against veterinarians alleging negligent or incompetent practice or other actions which may constitute professional misconduct should be lodged with the Board in writing.
Complainants may wish to contact the Board office to discuss the case before lodging a formal written complaint. The complaints process should be perused before submitting a complaint.
The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is the recognised professional association of veterinarians. Its mission is to promote, support and represent the veterinary profession by providing quality services to members and the community. The AVA administers a professional code of conduct which members are expected to respect.
