Microchipping Seminars for Veterinarians

All persons who implant microchips into dogs and cats must be accredited, including veterinarians.

The following information has been distributed throughout Queensland by the Australian Veterinary Association (Qld Division).

‘As you may be aware, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation had the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 passed in Parliament in December 2008.  This Act becomes enforceable from 1 July 2009.

As directed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation: ‘all veterinarians will be required to undergo a minimum of training.  This is important as some veterinarians may not wish to become an authorised implanter.  The new regulatory environment imposes significant obligations on authorised implanters as to how they deal with personal information and timeframes in which certain information must be updated etc’.

The Act requires all people who implant microchips into dogs and cats to be ‘authorised’ and to have an ‘authorisation number’ – including veterinarians.

The training for veterinarians will be conducted by the AVA Qld in a series of seminars throughout Queensland.  In addition to this, to accommodate veterinarians who cannot attend these seminars, a series of web-based seminars and distance learning materials is in the planning stages.

The seminars are mostly to bring everyone up to speed on the new legislation as there are significant fines for non-compliance.  It is anticipated the seminar will run for approximately one and a half hours and is assessed, requiring 100% to become and ‘authorised’ implanter.  The AVA will issue a certificate and an AVA certification number upon successful completion.  Details of registering with the State Government are still being defined and will be forwarded to successful participants as they become available.’
